Graduate Entrepreneurship Club Startup Spotlight: PicassoMD
PicassoMD is a value-based digital health company focused on one mission: transitioning quantity care into quality care.
Welcome to The GEC Startup Spotlight where we highlight the incredible startups founded by CMU students and alumni. The GEC and Swartz Center work hand in hand to nurture and accelerate Carnegie Mellon University’s entrepreneurial community
What problem does PicassoMD solve?
Every year $50 billion is wasted on unnecessary ER and specialist visits. Fifty percent of specialists visits are unnecessary and two-thirds of ER visits are for non-emergencies. This adds extra cost to our health care system and increases the amount of time it takes for patients who do need specialist care to access it.
How does PicassoMD do this?
PicassoMD connects primary care providers with trusted, local specialists to assist in triaging while the patient is still in the office
If a referral is necessary, PicassoMD helps seamlessly transition the patient from the PCP to a local specialist
Through Live Referrals, PicassoMD allows for direct care coordination from the moment a referral is initiated to the time a consult is completed
What is one recent achievement you'd like to share?
PicassoMD has been focused on deploying in medically underserved areas in the District of Columbia, North Carolina, and Mississippi.
Last year PicassoMD delivered 2,300 specialist consultations with a median connection time of less than 30 seconds. We helped these patients avoid 92 unnecessary ER visits and 688 unnecessary referrals.
What’s one area where you see opportunity for future growth?
We're looking to expand our presence with Federally Qualified Health Centers and health plans throughout the country.
